Robotic Umbilical Hernia Repair Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is an umbilical hernia, and why is it important to treat it? An umbilical hernia happens when any part of bowel (intestines) or fatty tissue (omentum) comes out through a weak area in the abdominal muscles near the belly button. Umbilical hernias may have no symptoms but they can lead to complications such as pain, obstruction of intestines, or strangulation of the tissue coming out if left untreated. 2. Is there any medicine to cure it, can surgery be avoided? Clearly the answer is NO. It is a structural defect which mandates repair. Surgical repair is often recommended to prevent these potential issues. The protruding part is put back into the abdomen. The defect is closed by suturing the muscles/ tissues nearby. 3. What is the role of mesh in umbilical hernia repair? As per international surgical society recommendations and consensus, defect less than 1 cm may not require any mesh. It is mandatory to reinforce the repair with a synthetic mesh in case of hernia more than 2cms. If the defect is between 1-2cms then it is desirable to put a mesh more which also depends on factors that surgeons consider to prevent recurrence in future. 4. How does robotic-assisted surgery enhance the precision of umbilical hernia repairs? Robotic-assisted surgery utilizes advanced robotic systems that provide surgeons with enhanced dexterity and control. The system translates the surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements of surgical instruments, allowing for meticulous dissection and repair of the hernia with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. This advanced technology reduces the complications and positively impacts overall surgical outcomes. 5. What types of mesh are used in robotic umbilical hernia repair, and how are they selected? The selection of mesh depends on various factors, including the size and location of the hernia, patient health, and risk of infection. Common types of mesh include: Synthetic Mesh, Dual/ Hybrid, Biological 6. Which is the best place to put a mesh in umbilical hernia repair? Mesh is a foreign body. Any contact of mesh with intestines can have disastrous consequences. Mesh can erode into intestines and cause perforation requiring removal of mesh. Therefore, mesh should ideally be placed in such a way that it will not stick to critical structures. One way of doing it is place it above peritoneum layer (TAPP repair) or adjacent to layer of muscles (eTEP procedure). This can be most successfully facilitated by using a robot. 7. Is laparoscopic Mesh repair better? Laparoscopic mesh repair usually involves placing a mesh below the peritoneum in contact with intestines. Though a special mesh with a non-adherent coating used, Laparoscopic IPOM repair using DUAL or Hybrid is far from being safe compared to TAPP or TEP procedures. 8. What are the benefits of choosing robotic-assisted surgery for umbilical hernia repair? Ideal placement of mesh: Mesh can ideally be placed in retrorectus (Muscle) planes or above peritoneum virtually preventing any adhesions to bowel. 9. How does the recovery process differ after robotic-assisted umbilical hernia repair? Recovery after robotic-assisted hernia repair is typically faster and more comfortable than after traditional open and laparoscopic surgery. Patients often experience Reduced Pain: Smaller incisions lead to less postoperative discomfort. Pain is less even compared to laparoscopic surgeries as tackers are avoided to fix the mesh, instead robotic suturing is done that drastically reduces immediate pain in the postoperative period. Shorter Hospital Stay: Many patients are discharged on the same day or within 24 hours. Quicker Return to Activities: Most individuals can resume normal activities within a few days to a week, with full recovery in a few weeks. Strict compliance to postop instructions is crucial for a better recovery. 6. Are there any risks with Robotic umbilical hernia repair? As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. However, robotic-assisted surgery is generally considered to be safe, with a low incidence of complications. The enhanced precision and minimally invasive nature of the procedure contribute to its safety profile. We have all safety mechanisms, BEST sterilization practices. 7. is Robot Assisted Surgery costlier than laparoscopic surgery? No. Our Robotic Umbilical hernia repair costs are comparable to Laparoscopic Hernia repair. With advanced technology, indigenous robot, innovative surgical techniques, our cost of Robotic Assisted umbilical hernia is similar to laparoscopic IPOM repair performed at most of centres. 7.How can I schedule for robotic umbilical hernia repair? During the consultation, we will assess your condition, discuss treatment options, and determine if robotic-assisted surgery is the appropriate approach for your hernia repair.
