Robotic bariatric surgery is transforming the field of advanced weight loss and metabolic procedures. I am deeply grateful to the almighty for the privilege of leading a robotic telesurgery for a large gastric tumour, performed remotely from the SSI Headquarters, Delhi, on a patient at Prakriya Hospitals, Bengaluru, using the SSI Mantra Robotic System by Dr. Santhosh
The telesurgery program commenced with a successful inguinoscrotal hernia repair, establishing confidence and a solid workflow foundation. This was followed by a highly complex gastric tumour resection near the gastroesophageal junction, a region closely associated with vital structures such as the pancreas, spleen, and adrenal gland. Utilizing the robotic system’s exceptional precision, we achieved an organ-sparing gastric resection with spleen preservation, ensuring minimal trauma and maintaining anatomical integrity. Subsequently, a telerobotic cholecystectomy was performed without changing the docking setup, showcasing system stability and operational efficiency.
This achievement marks Prakriya Hospitals Bengaluru’s first telesurgery, successfully executed in collaboration with SS Innovations International, Inc., spanning a distance of 2,116 kilometers. It highlights how robotic bariatric surgery combined with telesurgery can bridge geographical gaps, bringing specialized surgical expertise directly to patients without requiring travel.
